I am exhausted and haven't been feeling so well today. I am confident unnecessary stress is the cause and that is something I need to work on. Kayla's dental surgery went well. They began with a small cup of Demerol to relax her and her body before taking her back. The doctor and I had hoped they would be able to put Kayla under entirely but they were concerned about her blood pressure and heart rate so they had her sedated but awake at the same time. Regardless, she did very well. She is less than thrilled about what foods she can eat but she'll live. Her next dental procedures are July 6th, 2010 in the morning. What occurs at that time is a bit more intense (I guess that is the word) so we are hoping she accepts the drugs and is fast asleep during the procedure. She has 4 teeth coming in and 2 teeth that are very wiggly. They will be doing some extractions if the teeth have not fallen out by then. She experiences some discomfort when eating and the extractions will help eliminate that discomfort and allow the new teeth to continue coming in. Needless to say, her very first trip from the tooth fairy is approaching.
I have been thinking about doing a journal specifically posting a picture of Kayla once a day and the memory associated with the picture. It would be regarding any age, past or present. I want to devote this journal to her and when the time is right form it into a paper journal for her to keep forever. I am anxious to begin this and will probably do so soon.
Right now, I'm contemplating sleep.

The Birth of A Blessing

What is your childs name? Kayla Michele
How old is your child? Six going on 40.
Who does your child mainly look like? Some people say a spitting image of me while others say she looks more like Mike. I see both of us in her though.
What kind of diapers do you use? None, she is a big kid now but when she was using them it was Pampers and sometimes Huggies. It all depended on the cost. :x
What kind of bottles do you use? NICU bottles, I can't remember but some bottle that decreased the chances of her getting gas and having a tummy ache. Regular bottles.
Did you breastfeed your child? I tried. I wanted too. I shouldn't have given up based on what the doctors said.
If you answered no, why not? I was told by her doctors that my breast milk may have been to rich causing Kayla to get sick being a preemie and in the NICU.
Desribe your child in three words: Beautful, Intelligent, Stubborn
Are you still with the father of your child? No.
How old were you when you got pregnant with your child? 22.
Recent milestone that your child has reached? On June 17th, 2010 at 1245pm, Kayla had her first dentist adventure.
Was your pregnancy planned with this child? No. We had discussed it but wanted to get our life in order first - we had just gotten married and one month after our wedding day found out I was pregnant.
How has your life changed since having your child? I get to be a kid again, in a sense. I have matured. I became more determined & motivated to provide the best life for the two of us.
What color eyes does your child have? Beautiful brown eyes.
Do you miss what is was like to not have a child? There are some instances where I reflect back on those times and miss those moments but I would never give up the amazing journey of being a mother.
Do you wish you would have waited to have a child? Not at all.
One thing you wish someone would have told you about having a child? That children are smarter than you think. They can sense anything and everything around them and it can affect them in more ways than one whether it be at that moment or affecting their future and the person they are shaped to be.
Greatest memory of your child? Every moment is great. If I had to name one though I would say the day she was born because the memories formed since birth would not have taken place had she not been born.
Was your birth complicated? Kayla was born 2 months early. My water had a slight tear in it and it resulted in an infection. I also had a team of doctors and nurses in the room because she was coming premature. She stopped breathing after birth and was air evac'd to another hospital that could better meet her medical needs. But we both are fighters and overcame all obstacles.
Did you get pain medication? I didn't want to but they had to induce my labor and break my water. As soon as they began that, I demanded an epidural.
Did you need a c-section? No.
If yes, why? N/A
How long were you in labor? Well my water had been leaking three days before, it was such a small tear I did not realize it. But from the second I was admited to the hospital to the time she was born was 18.5 hours.
How did you know you were in labor? I woke up having some terrible cramps and thought I was peeing the bed. I knew I was having contractions and my instincts told me to get my butt to the hospital. I remember waking Mike up telling him I was going to the ER and I thought I was in labor. I told him Id call him and let him know if I was but he got out of bed pretty quick.

I now know...
You know the times where you find yourself reflecting on life, something you haven't really seen before becomes more apparent? I am finding that the more Psych classes I take, the more I learn and the more changes begin to take place. I mean this is a great thing and applying it to my life only strengthens me. I just wish I knew or understood what I know and understand now many years back. At the same time, I understand who I am today and why I am the way I am based on personal and past experiences.
Anyways, Kayla had her first dentist appointment. I tried not to make it sound to serious because in a way it is standard in life for people to have a cavity or two but Kayla's situation is a little bit more complex. In addition, it is an actual surgery where she will be knocked out entirely and will be having a lot of work for a 6 year old done in one setting. She inherited what my family calls the "Heil" mouth, terrible teeth so we need to knock this before it gets severe. Surgery hasnt been scheduled but I expect a call tomorrow regarding it.
Kayla wants me to take her to see Toy Story 3 tomorrow and I agreed. I love our "mother/daughter" time - memories that last forever. She is excited and I am too.
Off to rest my eyes, I need some new readers! I need a little social circle or something.

Shining Brightly
Okay, I planned on letting my mind express itself but the sun rising at 5am and my overly-hyper kitten was not part of the plan. Why on earth does the sun come up so early here now? I think it's time to eliminate the catnip and buy black-out curtains.
You know, I am actually doing well. I like to refer to Kayla's and I's new home as our sanctuary and on the days she is with her father, I prefer to call it my sanctuary of silence. I now understand why my mom would always want to have the house to herself. You see at that time I didn't understand. I was consumed by closing my bedroom door and very inactive. I didn't really want to be in anyone's way. But she knew there were people around and that kind of took away the independent "Im finally at peace, nothing is around. I can relax. Not interferences" mood. I experience the same thing here with the exception of I want Kayla here as often as possible but those moments where life is a little chaotic and I have massive amounts of homework (which is a lot now that I'm in my higher level classes), complete silence and being alone is kind of what I prefer. Most of the time, my door bell is ringing non-stop for Kayla or her and her friends are running in and out of the front door of the house to play. Drives me insane but at the same time, Im thrilled she has friends. Im thrilled she is happy. Hell, Im thrilled I am happy. Im thrilled life is changing for us for the better, finally.
Did I mention, we are still not unpacked? I swear it never ends. I don't have the option of sitting at home and unpacking. Between working, resolving various life issues, and enjoying the time I do have with Kayla between homework has made it next to impossible to fully unpack. Most of the stuff is unpacked but I have about 4 or 5 boxes that need to be unpacked and need to get a tub of china dishes to our new place, washed, and in our cabinets. My kitchen does not feel like home yet and I need it too. In order for this to happen, I need my dishes here!
On a personal note, I am settling here just fine. I am adjusting to this new life and I am happy. It can be stressful but for the most part, I love it and the most important part is I am happy and so is Kayla. There are habits that I am working on but I am doing good and finding ways to prevent them from happening. I have also developed a routine that I 90 percent of the time follow. I want to change these things and I believe that is why the change and doing what I can to make those changes occur come easy for the most part.
Kayla is doing great. She has been having this issue of accidently wetting herself and complaining of pain when she goes potty. She occasionally has some stomache pains. She was diagnosed with a bladder/uti infection yesterday and is on medications to address the pain when she goes potty as well as treat her bladder/uti infection. She is about to lose her 1st tooth and has one forming right in back of that tooth. I am not sure why this is but Im confident it will resolve itself and force itself into the correct place as soon as the one tooth falls out. I will be making a dentist appointment for her this week as well as a follow up appointment. She now weighs 54 pounds.
School is over and summer break is here. I think she likes it. Within the next week or so, I plan to get some sort of kindergarten/1st grade workbook so she can do a page or 2 a day. I would like to continue reminding her of what she has learned this year so her transition into first grade will go smooth. I am not sure what is happening with her new school situation but I am working on figuring that out.
Kayla loves her new friends. She absolutely loves them. Her and I still do things together such as watching movies and arts&crafts but Im pretty sure she is more interested in her friends here. And that is ok because she hasn't had that exposure and she needs it. We are working on some behavior issues and I am trying to implement rewards and other incentives to promote manners and good behavior. It seems to motivate her somewhat but I need to be more active in it so that somewhat becomes it is what motivates her entirely. In addition, I am trying to get her involved in some sort of ballet/dance classes.
School is going well. I am in PSY 390 - Learning and Cognition right now and so far I like it. My ultimate goal is to work with children so this is definitely one of those classes that will influence me and my future. I think my next class is Social Psychology and following that I will enter my Math courses back to back. I am less than thrilled about the math classes but once those two are done I should not have to worry about another one. I have an individual paper due tomorrow that I have started and will work on later today and tomorrow.
Spunki is no longer Spunki. Kayla changed his name to Squeebles. Either name suits him. He is adjusting very well here at home and is such a lap kitty. He loves to purr and he loves Sami. Sami adores him too, when she is not sleeping and he decides its play time and pounces on her waking her up. They are hyper together and I think it was a good idea to get Sami a playmate. She is used to having multiple cats around her. I think she enjoyed being her alone but I also think she enjoys that company and missed that company. I do need to get Squeebles neutered, yet another thing on my to-do list.
Things are going to be okay. I can feel it. More to come later, hopefully not an update but more of a expression of thoughts kind of thing, persay.

Idle
So much has happened since April, when I last posted. My life is chaotic and filled with so many events: medical, educational, professional, and other personal things. I promised myself I would express myself more because it is one of the things I enjoy most. A new friend from my current Psych class expressed turning her blog into a book eventually, it sparked my interest. It's definitely something I may actually do.
I spent this morning and early afternoon in Urgent Care with Kayla (will write about this soon) and really want to get some sleep but have every intentions of blogging in the next day or so.
Stay tuned...

The Scent of Something New
I love new beginnings. Since the divorce, I have pondered when I would feel stable enough to find my own place and begin life all over again. While in some aspects, my life began anew - in other aspects I feared the steps I needed to take.
Not to long ago, I was told that family would be moving out of the state. Talk about news. I was working part time at a job that paid next to nothing. I had no idea how to take the next step in a successful and positive manner. Somehow I managed - got a new job with more hours and ...
On April 3rd, 2010; Kayla and I finished moving into our new home. This is such a great change and an experience both of us can share together. Since the move, Kayla has made new friends. In addition, she is behaving by all my normal expectations: she goes to bed when told, takes her shower when told, helps out when needed - and with little to no fuss.
Finally Kayla has the consistency she needs in the home in which her and I reside. There are no disruptions. And I have finally found some sort of happiness and hope for a much more positive future.
I plan on blogging more now.
